Computer Won't Turn On? Here's How to Diagnose It

A computer that won't boot is alarming — but most causes are fixable. This guide walks through the most likely culprits from easiest to hardest.

Few things are more stressful than pressing the power button and getting nothing. Before you panic about data loss, work through these steps — most "dead" computers have a simple fix.

Step 1: Check the Basics First

It sounds obvious, but confirm the power cable is firmly seated at both the wall and the computer. Try a different power outlet. If it's a laptop, plug in the charger and wait 5 minutes before trying again — a fully flat battery won't boot immediately.

Step 2: Check for Power Indicator Lights

Is any LED lit on the machine? A light that turns on briefly suggests the motherboard receives power but something is stopping it from posting. No light at all usually points to the power supply or power cable.

Step 3: Listen for Beep Codes

Many motherboards emit a series of beeps if something is wrong. One long beep followed by three short beeps typically means a RAM issue. Count the beeps and search your motherboard model + beep code for specifics.

Step 4: Reseat the RAM

Dust or slightly dislodged RAM sticks are a surprisingly common cause of no-boot. Shut off power, open the case, remove each RAM stick, and firmly reseat them. Try booting with just one stick if you have two.

Step 5: Check the Power Supply

Desktop power supplies fail silently. If the fan isn't spinning when you press power, the PSU may be dead. A PSU tester (around $20 at Jaycar) lets you test without replacing it blindly.

Step 6: Test with Minimum Hardware

Disconnect all drives, USB devices and add-in cards. If the computer posts (shows a BIOS screen) with minimal hardware, a connected peripheral was causing the problem. Add devices back one at a time to identify the culprit.

Hard Drive Failure
