Cloud storage is one of the most effective ways to protect your files — they're automatically backed up offsite, accessible from any device, and easily shared. But not all services suit all users equally.
OneDrive (Microsoft)
Best for: Windows users, Microsoft 365 subscribers, families.
OneDrive is built into Windows 11 and integrates directly with the File Explorer. If you use Word, Excel or Outlook, it's the most seamless option. Microsoft 365 Personal ($109/year) includes 1TB of OneDrive storage alongside the Office apps — excellent value.
The Personal Vault feature adds extra encryption for sensitive documents within OneDrive.
Google Drive
Best for: Android users, heavy Gmail users, collaboration, Google Workspace subscribers.
Google's real-time document collaboration is unmatched for shared work. Google Photos integrates tightly for photo backup. Google One starts at $2.79/month for 100GB (AUD).
Google Drive is platform-agnostic — works equally well on Windows, Mac and Linux. Its weaker point is Microsoft Office file compatibility; working with .docx and .xlsx files is functional but not seamless.
iCloud
Best for: Mac, iPhone and iPad users in the Apple ecosystem.
If you use multiple Apple devices, iCloud is almost frictionless. Photos, contacts, messages, files — all sync automatically. iCloud Drive on Windows exists but is less polished. iCloud+ starts from $1.49/month for 50GB.
The main limitation is the Apple ecosystem lock-in. Sharing files with non-Apple users requires extra steps.
Our Recommendation for Most Melbourne Users
Windows PC + iPhone (common combination): OneDrive on the PC, iCloud for photos on the iPhone, Google Photos as a free secondary photo backup. For simplicity — just pick one and use it consistently.
